Why do “goal” books all have to read like textbooks?

What creative person wants to read, let alone follow through, on something that puts them to sleep? Not me! So let’s talk about what it takes to have a successful and creative art business... whatever kind of creative that may be.

"The Goal Wheel for Artists™" talks in terms artists and creative types understand, COLOR!

PhotoTara Reed explains...

No black & white boredom for you -- you need all the colors in the spectrum to create the life of your dreams! Let’s change the stereotype from ‘starving artists’ to ‘thriving artists’... one dream, goal and task at a time!

If you are an artist and you want to be in business, not just working at a hobby, there are three areas in which you need to set goals in order to succeed: goals to CREATE your art, goals to PROMOTE your art and goals to RECHARGE yourself. Isn't it a wonderful coincidence that there are also 3 primary colors? (I thought you'd agree!) I'll teach you how to work around the wheel and keep your business rolling forward.

It is very hard to get where you want to go without a destination in mind.

Would you get in a car and say “Let’s go!”? Maybe if it was a beautiful day and you just wanted to go for a drive.

But if, while on this pleasure trip, you asked your joy-riding companion “Are we there yet?” you’d get a very confused look as a response. How do they know if you are there yet if you are just out driving with no destination?

Makes sense in that example, right? So why do so many people expect to create wonderful businesses and lives without taking the time to define what that actually means to them?

It's time to get clear about your dreams.

Your dreams are the finished piece of art you hang on the wall, the completed sculpture that graces your entry way, the exquisite jewelry that adorns your wrist. It is the creative destination of your choosing. When the dreams are clear, the goals and tasks will follow.

From the eDesk of Artist Tara Reed

Dear fellow artist or creative professional,

Have you ever had any of the following thoughts (and be honest!) –

  • I don't like to set goals because then I can't follow my inspiration.
  • I'm an artist, I'm supposed to be free like the wind!
  • Setting goals seems too boring, rigid or hard so I prefer to go with the flow.
  • Too much structure makes me crazy and goals = too much structure.
  • I know I should set goals to be a more successful artist.

Well if any of these ring true, trust me, you are not alone! I have felt some of them, heard all of them and more! The thing is, if you don't know where you want to go, how exactly do you expect to get there?

I am one of those odd-ball artists who didn't go to art school but got a degree in Marketing. Some days my right and left brain are in such a battle for control I think my head might break open.

I'm a logical, process thinker and highly creative at the same time. Too much structure in my week makes me cranky but I understand the need for planning and targets to keep me moving towards my dream.

I have built my art licensing business from an idea in my head to a viable business on track to bring in over $80,000 this year, yes – in this economy. (I'm not a huge fan of divulging income but I think it's important for you to know who you might be learning from and that they have reached some level of success.) Do you think I got there without a plan? No way!

"The Goal Wheel for Artists™" is a combination of tips, techniques and strategies that I have picked up along the path of life. From student to mother to business owner – I've need to develop some skills so I wouldn't spend my time spining in circles!

At the same time, I like to have fun! I finished my schooling and prefer to read things that both educate and entertain me. So why read a book that reminds you of school when you can play with concepts near and dear to the artistic heart - the color wheel. (I know some of you are saying you don't use a color wheel but I bet no one is scratching their head wondering what it is!)

Setting goals doesn't mean you are locked into a schedule with no room for working from inspiration. My preferred way of organizing my life is to know what I need to do but not have my days so full of appointments that I have to plan lunch with a friend 3 weeks out. That doesn't leave the flexibility to ride the waves of creativity when they are high and take needed breaks when the ideas aren't flowing. I understand the need for flexibility and will teach you how to have it too.

If this sounds good so far, consider getting a copy of "The Goal Wheel for Artists™ eBook". This has worked for me and I believe it can work for you. Read on for more details.

Here's to your creative success!
